The Nesque River Canyons
The Nesque river Canyon, or 'Gorges de la Nesque', is the most spectacular canyon in Provence after the Stuning Verdon Gorge. The grandiose, wild Nesque canyon was formed by several geological shifts and is twenty kilometres long. It is at times more than 400 metres deep.
A scenic road with tunnels and arches winds from Villes-sur-Auzon up to Monieux, and leads to the high lookout point at Castelleras, at 734 meters of altitude. Overlooking the majestic Rocher du Cire, the views over the canyon are magnificient.
In addition to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, for which it has been recognized as a Natura 2000 site, the Neque gorge is also home to prehistoric caves, and at the bottom of the canyon, a Romanesque chapel was built under a rocky outcrop.
